So it's not a totally un-peachy day...

As emotionally exhausting as my weekend was, there was a DEFINITE bright spot! Here's some pics of our new girl for those of you that haven't seen her yet. (She's SO TINY - truly smaller than Tucker ever was - and she looks even smaller next to my gigantor baby. haha!) Carly Elise is a DOLL with all that black hair! She's very sweet and cuddly and has the tiniest, highest little voice. So sweet! :-)

L&S,
Les (and Tucker and Carly)

In response to the challenge...

In response to Unclewesty's call to our lack of bloggering (see, Westy, how I spelled my made-up word however I wanted ;-D ha!), and since, apparently, my posting pictures of the same old kid day after day doesn't count, I shall BLOG!!! (My only warning is it was a rough weekend, so it's not all peachy keen in mood today.)

So this Mommy thing can be TOUGH. (I know this is a shock to all of you.) I have told anyone who will listen how grateful I am for my sweet, happy, sleep through the night baby. I have never taken how blessed we are with her temperment for granted. But I will say that the fact that we don't have a fussy baby makes her really fussy, difficult times so very difficult. I don't know if it's because we haven't had to learn how to deal with this or if it's because her fussiness seems like it MUST be for a REAL reason (not just fussy baby) since she doesn't ever do it. Because she never screams, when she DOES scream, I feel like there's generally something REALLY wrong with her (fever, teething, something's pinching her, etc.) And really almost everytime she screams (I use this word to distinguish from just normal fussing or basic crying) it is because there is something truly wrong.

All this is a preamble to the story of my deciding to travel with the 4 month old and without the Daddy this weekend. We planned our driving Friday night to coincide with our normal bedtime, so hopefully she would sleep the whole trip, then transfer right to Carly's crib (which she is not currently using). This plan of action has worked well in the past. She did sleep the whole trip, but she woke WIDE AWAKE when we got to Scott and Brittany's. But she did go right back to sleep after nursing, so nothing too bad. Just a little less rest time for me that night (as she still woke up at 6am Eastern time).

Saturday, however, did not go quite so smoothly. For some reason, Tucker decided Saturday that she would NOT nurse. This meant that for every meal (every 2 hours for my big baby), I had to give her a bottle, then pump to replace it so we'd have one for the next meal. Again, a little stressful and more exhuasting than usual, but nothing too bad. Then, Saturday night, she would NOT go to sleep at her normal bedtime (chosen by her, not us). And she cried and cried and screamed and screamed because she was so sleepy and wouldn't go to sleep. Nana and I finally decided to try a car ride, which is a given sleep-aid for my baby. She did sleep after a relatively short trip, but woke right up when I transfered her to her crib. She she stayed awake HOURS after her normal bedtime and only went to sleep when she did because Nana rocked her for more than 30 min. in her carseat. (Thank heavens for Nana!)

Sunday, of course, began at 6am Eastern time (because my baby's actually part alarm clock). She nursed our first time in the morning, but only with much fitting and distraction from Nana. Church - good. Lunch - good. After lunch, happy and talking to everyone she saw. But she once again, refused to nurse and then skipped a meal. After waiting on that meal for an hour, I finally decided to drive to Scott and Brittany's, nurse there, and then drive the rest of the way home (at least I'd be making forward progress). Got to Scott's fine, then tried to nurse and she refused. (And I'll note here that my baby is not indecisive. She's not one of those you can talk into nursing. If she doesn't want it, you're not going to make it happen. The more you force, the fussier she gets and the fussier she gets, the less likely she is to do it. NO CLUE where she gets that strong will. teehee) So Nana gave her a bottle while I pumped (again, thank heavens for Nana). She downed her bottle and then SCREAMED for more. She screamed and screamed and screamed. (Just ask Carly.) So as soon as I was done pumping, I gave her a little more and she downed it and SCREAMED for more. So I gave her a little more (now we're at a total of twice what we usually eat in one meal). She cried a little after downing that one, but Nana got her calmed down (while I cried at the sink washing stuff). (Again, thank heavens for Nana.)

I will add here that many of my tears at this point were at seeing the stark difference of my nursing experience to Brittany's. I LOVE nursing my baby and am so glad that I've been able to, but I struggle EVERY DAY to get enough to keep my baby happy. We never have extra. I stress everytime I have to use one of my precious bottles of milk, for fear of not being able to replace it. It's very stressful and hard work, but I think it's worth it, and I love being able to do it. But Brittany just has this amazing over-abundance already. She, less than a week in, has more than 3 times what I have 4 months in. That contrast combined with Tucker's refusal to nurse just did me in. (And that's not to begrudge Brittany HER experience, but rather wanting some of that myself. )

Back to our original travel story, I got her in the car, she was alseep before I hit a mile, and all was well until my pause in Carrollton to hand something off to Nannette Elise. She started waking up there, so I hopped in the car quickly (because motion generally equals sleep) and got going. My attempts failed. She woke all of the way up and SCREAMED all the way to 75 (close to an hour). Most of that hour, we cried together because there are few things that make you feel more helpless than being in the driver's seat of a moving car with a helpless, screaming baby in the back, to whom you can give no comfort or aid.

Jump to Monday morning, and Tucker woke up as sweet as possible and nursed like nothing had ever been any different.

This is all to let you all know that I am no longer traveling with my baby. She is officially a HOME baby now. Day trips only. If you want to see her, she'll be at the house on Dahoma. (Which means if you want to see me, I'LL be at the house on Dahoma.)

I DO NOT KNOW how parents of colicky babies survive. (And again, I apologize for the non-peachy-keen mood of this blog, but that's me today.)

SO MUCH FUN!!!

LIFE IS GOOD!!!!
L&S,

JUMP AROUND!!! JUMP AROUND!!!

JUMP UP, JUMP UP AND GET DOWN!!!
Now that we have the harness off, we are slowly trying to introduce things that help her do the things she couldn't do with the harness - tummy time, pushing up, flipping over, bouncing, etc.
Today, I introduced her to this jumper. She had SO MUCH FUN! My favorite part is how every time she sets the noises off with her bouncing, she looks to me for approval/reaction. SUCH A CUTIE!!!
L&S,
Leslie

Don't know WHERE she learned this!!

*I give my standard camera-woman apologies. To get her to perform, I have to look at HER, not the camera.*

L&S,
The Bowers Bunch

There were five in the bed and the little one said....

...ROLL OVER!!! ROLL OVER!!!
That's right, folks! She did her first rollover from tummy to back. (If you look at pics of the harness, you'll understand why this hasn't happened previously -- too much surface area, as the geometry teacher, Nana, says.) She did it twice in a row without warning and, though I had my camera in hand (just trying to get tummy time on tape), I missed them both. But I do have an "in the middle" picture and a "look what I did" picture. :-)

So I'm not a real awards show kind of person and the Emmys this year, for the most part, were no exception. There were a few comedians who were quite funny (Ricky Jervais, John Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and, OF COURSE, Steve Martin) and I enjoyed the bit about the Smothers Brothers. But the one gem from the show is something we all can enjoy! Josh Groban did a medley of TV theme songs and it is FABULOUS!!! Even if you don't know all of the shows, most of them are very familiar, and all of them are made funny simply by the fact that it's Josh Groban singing them. :-) Enjoy!!!

Rockettes, Here I Come!

I realize that for most babies, this is old hat by now, but for my sweet baby, kicking and pushing with those sweet little feet is a new adventure. :-) Hooray for harness-free life!

Harness-free -- Way to be!!!

First pair of pants :-D

*Hiccup*

So this video has two purposes. The first is for you to see the HUGE hiccups my daughter gets regularly (so funny). The second is for you to see the cute baby feet we have all been without for over 3 months now. :-) yipee!!

OOOOH, TOES....for some people...

*For those of you who recognize this quote, I apologize for how insanely inappropriate it is for this moment, but you get my point...*
DRUMROLL, PLEASE!!! We got the harness off today! Yipee!!! I get to see baby toes anytime I dang well please now. :-) How fabulous is that?!? Here's some pics from the day.

Sleeping on Daddy during our hour plus wait for the doctor.

in her first set of bloomers (that were almost too small) ha!

with Daddy in front of the children's pictures in the lobby

with Mommy outside the doctor's office
As we expected, she has had a couple of small panicked moments, but most of our day has been spent happy and kicking. We are having SO MUCH FUN. We're having to re-learn some things, and holding her is completely different ~ in such a delightful way!!! What a joy!!!

Prepare to smile

This is my favorite one so far!!! After bathtime tonight, Drew started playing peek-a-boo with Tucker and she began giggling so loudly that I heard her from downstairs (where I was locating her comb). SO STINKING CUTE!!!

A Step Back In Time

So for a brief moment today, I thought I'd step back in time to a simpler time -- back when I was constantly sharing videos of my CAT rather than my BABY. ;) tee-hee. All I'll say about this video is my cat is a total goober!

Thoughts...

Two thoughts:
1.) As I watch the video in the previous post ("Eating Ellie") I see SO MUCH Mama in her (Sheri, that is). She's such a meshing of all of our traits that there are times when she looks JUST like me or JUST like Drew and when she's mad, JUST like Scott. But in just her everyday inquisitiveness, I see Sheri ALL OVER that face. :-)
2.) Just got off the phone with the Ortho office. We have her next appointment made for September 22nd. Let's start praying now for a healthy hip and a harness removal. :-)

Eating Ellie

A new Tucker video -- Sorry it's been so long, but I was out of town this weekend for Scott and Britt's shower. Tucker has begun developing hand/eye coordination. She can consistently get her hand in her mouth and keep it there (and sounds like she's trying to eat it when this happens). She has also begun grabbing Ellie's ** feet and getting them into her mouth. (Everything goes to the mouth now.)

**I tried to name the elephant "Little Al" but I got THE LOOK from D about that, so he named her Ellie instead. :-) Ah well. Can't blame a girl for trying. :-)

Oops!

So I just realized that the last "talking" video I put up wasn't the one where she did all of the talking. haha! Let me try it again (and I'll put two to make up for my mistake). :-D
*Stick with this one to the end. It's worth it.*
*In this one, Tucker demostrates her new knowledge that the sound she makes when crying is more effective at attention-getting than normal sounds, so she has already learned the "fake cry". haha!*

This COULD be a problem when she's a teenager...

Hmmm... She's decided that it's more fun to grab her dress and pull it to her face than it is to do the same with a burp cloth. :-D ha!

Blatant Momming

So here's my regular mom collage of cuteness!
**Disclaimer: In some of my Tucker videos, she is not centered in the shot and may move in and out of the center of the shot. The reason for this is I have to hold the camera out of her focus or she stops whatever she's doing and stares at the camera. I have to hold it to the side and get her to look at me. I apologize. :-)
Tucker is starting to "talk" more and more. This video is from earlier this week. Today (Friday), she came home and "talked" almost constantly for more than an hour. It was SO CUTE, but I didn't get any of it on video. (The camera says, "Be quiet" to her regularly, apparently.)
Poor little thing got so congested this past weekend that her voice was quite hoarse. Her "talking" got even cuter! (Who knew that was even possible?!?)
Everyone says that babies look like angels when they sleep and mine is no exception. However, what's even better than her "looking like an angel" sleep mode is her "making faces" sleep mode. She smiles, opens her eyes with eyes rolled back so you only see the whites, and sometimes even chuckles. VERY CUTE!!!

When it's this small, do we call it a half-half?

Our friends Jeff and Lisa sent us a gift for Tucker. It is the CUTEST, fluffiest, tiniest tutu I have EVER seen. Now, this is not a cheap, Dollar Store tutu. This thing is a million tiny little two inch wide strips of tulle stacked on top of each other with a big satin bow. It is ADORABLE!!! I can't wait to put it on her. (It'll have to wait until the harness comes off.)

The tutu also came with a cute little flower headband. I just HAD to put it on the girl to see. I'm sorry, but she looks like a baby doll in this picture! (no bias displayed here at all)

Free at last... if only for 15 minutes

I wanted to share with you some of the delightful moments of Tucker sans harness pre bathtime. She wiggles and squirms like it's nobody's business! SO CUTE!!! I can't wait until we get to have her this way all the time. We're hoping the harness will come off on August 26th when we get our next ultrasound. Yipee!!!
You might have noticed that she doesn't ever straighten her legs straight down (they're turned out and to the side when she straightens them). Contrary to what you might think, this isn't really a result of the harness (though that might make it more pronounced). Look closely at her legs in this picture and you will see that she doesn't straighten them down because they are TOO FAT!!! They actually won't come any closer to center because of all of those cute little rolls! **Insert conversation with Nan and Betty discussing how no one ever comes up to adults and says, "Those fat rolls are SO CUTE!!!" here. :-)

L, S, and fat rolls!

Stay Tuned

So this whole working/mothering combo is VERY time-consuming! No time to upload pics and vids during the week, it seems, but I do have new pics, vids, and thoughts coming. Expect multiple entries at some point this weekend. :-)

Girls! Girls! Girls!

(Okay, just ONE girl! Here's some cute videos of Little Bit for those of you who wish you could be with her in person. :-) tee-hee)
All Smiles
These are some of our favorite moments with Tucker. She's learning to smile in response to our smiles. They are very cute. What's most amazing is they seem to happen most frequently in the morning. We're not sure where she got that happy in the morning thing as we are both slow starters. :-) ha!
This is going to be an amazing party trick one day!
A tiny amount of congestion...
Ok, so you know how new moms always talking about watching their baby's chest to make sure he/she is breathing? If you listen closely, you'll see I rarely have to do that with Tucker. (The other noise is her bouncy chair. It's almost ever-present in our house.)
Tucker with her 2 best buds
her fist and her elephant
What I refer to as "REAL talking"
(and of course, Drew mocks me for this)
I realize she's not saying words, but there is also a CLEAR difference between this and the normal grunts and noises she has been making. She makes these noises when she's trying to immitate our talking. She watches our mouths, works hard to copy, and then makes these coos. They are SO STINKING CUTE!!!!

In Response to Uncle Westy

**I just want to point out that this is TWO BLOGS IN A ROW that have actual words in them! Who knew I had anything left in me other than pics of Little Bit?!? **

So Uncle Westy wrote of two things on which I have thoughts. :-)

First of all, he mentioned how I shall henceforth be known as Tucker's mom, and after spending 2 months (that's right, she's 2 months old today) with Tucker, I figure that's not a bad title at all! To be always associated with something so wonderful... well, I could do worse. ;) And let's be honest, I've never been just Leslie my whole life anyway. I've always been either Rick and Sheri's daughter or Scott's little sister. Then I moved to Carrollton and became Anna's cousin and/or Nan and Mr. Witham's niece. Then in Baton Rouge, I was Drew's wife. My identity has so frequently been through my connections to others, and since I love all of my "others", I'm ok with that. :-)

Secondly, Unc wrote on his blog about our family and how blessed we all are to have each other. My favorite story from the wedding weekend was listening to Munner tell of her trip to Randy's wedding. She said spending the weekend with her kids without their kids was like having her kids again. Then she said, "I have such good kids." (And she said this in wonder and amazement as if she has no idea how that happened.) I replied, "Yeah, I have NO IDEA how they got that way. You surely had NOTHING to do with it!" What an amazing person and what an amazing legacy she has built and is still building. If I can create a family even half as amazing as the one she has nurtured, I will have succeeded in life!

L&S to you all!

Save the WHAT?!?

In our world where everyone has a cause, I sometimes run across a political statement that gives me pause. Saw a huge bumper sticker on a car this week that read,

"SAVE THE UTERUS!!!"

I didn't realize the uterus was endangered or even in danger! Is there a shortage of good uteri in the world? Are our uteruses "people" too? with feelings and sorrows? Are we worried that in today's overpopulated world, that we're not producing ENOUGH uncared for and undisciplined children, so we need to save ALL reproductive systems so even people who should NOT reproduce can do it readily even when they don't want to? Or did I miss some medical discovery in which a good uterus can cure cancer or AIDS?

It's a real thinker, I tell ya!

L&S,
L

And the winner for best soundtrack is...

Thought I would share my life's new soundtrack...
Every morning between waking up and the first nap, we have a good hour of this...
And a few times a day, I will begin to hear this sound overpowering anything else in the room...
LIFE IS GOOD!!!!!
L&S,
Leslie

Face First

Tucker's latest "thing" is what we call "nose scrubbing" in our house. When you put her on your shoulder, she starts scrubbing her nose. She'll move her face back and forth and back and forth -- over and over wiping her nose (and entire face, really) as she goes. We have NO IDEA why she does this, but it is VERY comical to watch. After the scrubbing, she then falls asleep face DOWN into your shoulder, arm, or arm pit (LOVELY). It is HYSTERICAL!!!

And, of course, once she has slept face down, she will eventually pick her head up, take a huge breath, and then resituate herself to a normal sleeping position. The result (and bonus humor) is that she has "sleep lines" all over her face! :-D

This baby stuff is hard work, but it has MORE than enough laughs to make it worthwhile. :-D

One Cool Trick!!!

For those of you who haven't seen it, Tucker's pacis have a hole in the middle (where the little plastic bump usually is). We spend much of our days with a finger stuck in this hole to hold the paci in.
Well, today, Tucker accidentally got her finger in that hole and spent the next 20 min. sucking on her finger through the paci. She was so proud (and SO funny-looking)!
